C.S. Crew – Funky Pack Out Now!

March 4th, 2013

CSCrew

The C.S. Crew’s  Funky Pack can be best described as Nigeria’s own blend of Kool and the Gang, Mandrill and the Ohio Players with a Moog synthesizer thrown in for good measure.  Reissued for the first time this late 70s Nigerian raw funk masterpiece album includes bonus tracks from the related group Youths of the Universe and liner notes written by Comb and Razor label owner and Nigerian record collector extraordinaire, Uchenna Ikonne.

Funky Pack features nine cuts of rare Nigerian funk. This includes the sweaty and growling funk tracks “Bread Power,” “Doin’ the Good Thing,” and “Freaky Funkyfied Fix,” along with the psychedelic funk dancer “Love is Peace” and the end-of-the-night lo-fi party jam “I’ve Found Love.”  Youths of the Universe featured two members of the C.S. Crew and this album includes the psych/garage tracks  ”Troubles of the World”, “Dig In With Time”, and  ”Last Day” from the extremely rare Youths of the Universe album Gettin Into YOU.

Out in stores now on CD and LP  or you can order here.

Afro Kelenkye Band!

March 20th, 2012

With the help of Voodoo Funk’s Frank Gossner we are putting out unreleased material from the Afro Kelenkye Band. Led by Jagger Botchway, the group recorded the legendary rare Ghanaian Funk album, Moving World.  Soon after the group went back into the studio to record more tracks but ran out of money. The recordings were left on the shelves until Miles Cleret from Soundway Records found them some 40 years later and brought them to Frank’s attention.  The track “Jungle Funk” sees the group relax into a mid tempo Afro funk groove. “Mother Africa” is a guitar driven Afro psychedelic instrumental with a fuzzed out guitar solo. “Too Bad Girl” features a dark melody and a laid back trumpet solo. “Munchin’ Session” grooves with trumpet riffs galore. Mastered from the original reel to reel tapes and pressed on 2 x 45s and housed in a thick collectible jacket cover designed by Frank Gossner. Out now! You can buy it here for $14.99. Limited to 1,000 copies.
