Stanton Davis originally created this seminal jazz funk masterpiece back in 1977. It’s being reissued for the first time on LP after many years of being left in obscurity. Every track from start to finish is top notch, featuring beautiful instrumentation and complex arrangements.

Stanton Davis was mentored by the great jazz legend George Russell and later formed the Ghetto Mysticism Band in Boston, MA. He and the group performed exciting live shows in the city all throughout the ‘70s.

Brighter Days showcases an array of uptempo jazz funk stylings, from the fast-paced fury of “Things Cannot Stop Forever” to the deep space sound of “Space A Nova I” (already featured on Gilles Peterson’s Revolutionary Jazz compilation) to the atmospheric instrumentation of “Play Sleep” to the beautiful vocals of “Brighter Days” and the loose funk groove of “Funky Fried Tofu.”

We’re proud to present our first release in our new Holy Grail 45 Series. All of of Holy Grail 45s are remastered and pressed on virgin vinyl with a colorful gold label. This release was tracked down by Andy Noble who met with songwriters, Clyde and Curtis Stozier, to license it from them. Fabulous Fugitives featuring Michael Sharkey is a rare doubler A sider containing two awesome deep funk cuts from this Chicago group. Originally it was released in 1975 on the J’Ace label owned by local gospel record label owner Style Wooten. The group only put out one 45 and the orginal masters have long since been destroyed as far as we know. The A side, “What the World Needs” is a politically charged funk bomb. The flip side, “You Made Me Cry” is a more straight forward funk track with plenty of fat drum fills.

Growing up Jordan’s been heavily influenced by her mother’s southern cooking and her love of Motown. There are two great tracks on this 7 inch coming out. The A side is a masterful cover of “Tell Me What’s On Your Mind” and the B side is an original sister funk track with howls of joy reminiscent of Betty Davis. Barbara Lynn Ozen or as she is known to soul enthusists around the world, Barbara Lynn, has been making music since she the early 60s and continues to this day. Although she’s had hits such as ”You’ll Lose A good Thing” on Atlantic Records, I feel her best material was on the Tribe label.  Here she recorded her seminal track “I’m A Good Woman” that still rings out edgey and fresh and easily fetches $100 on ebay in mint condition. The flip side is a loose funk jam glued together with tight bassline and discofilled guitar with party vibe vocals. We have been hard at work putting everything together to make the first release from Cultures of Soul Records, the label arm of Cultures of Soul happen. We’ve got the 2 tracks ready and mastered from our friends at M Works Studios and we are getting ready to get them cut to vinyl. The A Side is a modern soul number with a tight mid tempo groove and a beautiful understated organ making the whole track melt with the vocals. The B Side is a lose but uptempo funk jam with a disco rhythm guitar and a bassline that sticks to the groove like your feet will stick to the dancefloor.  You can expect the release to come out in early May. We’ll have more information as it comes so stayed tuned. Audio snippets coming next week!
